British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.
RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The United Nations reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
