A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
